Romance and Fate - SCSO's first concert for 2026

Join us on March 29th 2pm at The Events Centre Caloundra for our opening concert of 2026. The Internationally renowned Daniel Kossov will conduct us once again for a performance of some of the greatest orchestral music ever written.

We open the concert with "Romance" and the joyous and comic overture to Otto Nikolai's "Merry Wives of Windsor". This will be followed by our own cello virtuoso Julia Janiszewski performing the solo for Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo theme" - a timeless work of great beauty beloved by audiences since its first performance in 1877.

In the second half we'll perform Tchaikovsky's epic Fifth Symphony in E minor. Enigmatically described by the composer as being about "Fate" this work viscerally evokes the march to war with all it's resolve, pomp, power and pride, dreams of better times, a battle scene that caused outrage amongst the critics at the symphony's premiere, and a jarring finale in E major that somehow captures the ambivalent mix of emotions of soldiers victoriously returning home.
